The title of the post was a hard to believe phrase or I can simply say impossible to believe phrase for me. Now I believe it is true!.
Many people keep giving us advise saying this is good for you or that is good for you. But we don't start believing each and every advise we receive. We start believing something only when we have tried and experienced it ourselves and find that it is true and really adds value to us. Don't we all do that.... :)
I used to hate math in school and college because I never understood or you can say the math teachers never made the subject lessons easy to understand. Though I tried many times to at least conquer an inch of math by understanding it, could not even conquer a cm, so I used to always run miles away from Math ...;(. But I felt the jitters of not having strong math skills in school, college as well as in my job, but I somehow managed to tread away but putting in extra efforts to understand the particular math concept which was in focus.I was not happy with the fact that I hate math and was always thinking that I should make friends with Math someday.....;). The first step towards that was to go back to the basics by knowing it better.
As children the reason to run away from math was probably the teaching methodology . There are lots of why's which need to be answered while learning math,.i.e., why a particular concept works.
For example, lets take the very basic math concept of multiplication. We are taught x times y is xy and multiplication tables etc. But many a times the co-relation of addition and multiplication is not explained. Multiplication can be viewed as repetitive addition,.i.e.,x added to itself y times or y added to itself x times.
Below example gives a better idea of "why" addition and multiplication are co-related.
2*5 = 10
2+2+2+2+2 = 10
5*2 = 10
5+5 = 10
All of the above ways yield the same answer of 10.
The beauty of Math is that there is more than one way of solving a problem and this unique feature of math makes it very interesting and of course RECREATIONAL!! . As with learning any concept, if the why's and how's (????) are explained at the time of learning it, the concept becomes easy to understand and thereby increases our knowledge in the long run and helps us in problem solving as well.
So next time you see a math problem please don't run away from it, just try to befriend it. Understand the problem's concept and you will be able to solve it in no time. Last but not the least, practice makes perfect. This is very true for Math. This will also enable you to do some mathemagic in future.
Happy Math Learning .....:)
